Summer in the City
Where musicians begin
The Summer in the City Camp (SITC) at San José State University was established in 2007 to offer junior high and high school students a week of musical immersion and social interaction with one another. Young musicians have the opportunity to work with instructors from San José State University School of Music and Dance as well as renowned musicians from across the country. Primary ensembles are led by distinguished conductors and rehearse each day. In addition, campers attend sectional rehearsals, participate in a chamber ensemble (small ensemble), and select two elective classes to take for the week. Campers also attend evening concerts and recitals throughout the week as part of their daily camp activity.
SITC at San José State University offers abundant opportunities for performance. Campers participate in one primary ensemble during the week (choir, band, or orchestra). The camp staff works closely with campers to develop increased understanding and proficiency in their specialized areas of interest. Every primary ensemble and chamber ensemble performs a concert at the end of each week. The Friday evening performance includes the chamber recital and Jazz Band concert. The Saturday final performance provides campers the opportunity to enjoy and share the results of their hard work with each other as well as friends and family! In addition, campers are encouraged to perform for their peers in the annual camp solo competition and camp variety show. Learn more.
