Gus Lease came to SJSU in 1950 after teaching at University of Oklahoma for four years and University of Colorado for a year. He has taught a total of 67 years in higher education.
Professor Lease organized and directed the 350-voice Choral Ensemble at SJSU, which sang Oratorios and Cantatas with school orchestra; 88 voice Men’s Glee Club; 200 voice Women’s Glee Club; and taught classes in Choral Techniques and Materials, Opera Workshop, Vocal Pedagogy; Supervised student teachers, Music Fundamentals, Choral Workshop, Student Teachers; soloist with symphonies and performed numerous recitals and concerts; toured the Orient and Europe with the “Gus Lease Show”, entertaining the troops for the Professional Entertainment Branch of the State Department. He has also received many awards, including the 1992 National Outstanding Professor from Vector Marketing as well as awards from the Department of Army, Europe, and Pacific Command.
Professor Lease served as chairman of the Music Department for over five years, was a faculty member of the Department of History for six years teaching History of Music, and is presently teaching Music Appreciation in the School of Music and Dance.
