How to Apply - Graduate
The Process
Like undergraduates, prospective graduate students must be accepted to the University as well as the School of Music and Dance. Learn more about the University's requirements for application.
Admission
Your application will automatically be forwarded to the School of Music and Dance, and you will usually be accepted by the School as Conditionally Classified. This status is normal for all entering graduate students. The next step is to take the SMD Graduate Area Placement Audition and Entrance Examination, both of which are given the first two days before classes begin. Please check with the music office (408-924-4673) or email musicdancerecruitment@sjsu.edu for updates on places and times.
By special arrangement, the Graduate Area Applied Music Placement Auditions may be satisfied by submission of an audio tape, CD, and/or video. Check with the appropriate area for information.
The Graduate Entrance Examination may be taken off-campus at the applicant’s current undergraduate school. This examination music be proctored by a full-time music faculty member and returned directly to the SJSU School of Music and Dance for evaluation. Check with the SMD Graduate Coordinator for information.
Foreign Language Information
Evaluation of degrees from foreign universities s covered by treaties with foreign nations and is normally a mechanical process. In some cases students with degrees from foreign countries are subject to special evaluation by the School of Graduate Studies and Research. The foreign degree is usually honored by the School of Graduate Study and Research upon a positive evaluation and written support statement from the Graduate Coordinator. Foreign students have three English language requirements:
- Acceptance to the University requires a score of 550 or higher on the Test of Fluency in the English Language (TOFEL)
- Completion of Music 100W with a grade of C or higher.
- Completion of Music 200 with a grade of B or higher.
