Student Entrepreneurs Win National Title

Date: 04/02/2007

A team of engineering students has placed first in a national competition for young social entrepreneurs. Students Scott Cassell and Tim Wang presented the team's project -- the world's first human/electric/solar-powered vehicle -- at the National Idea-to-Product Competition for EPICS and Social Entrepreneurship in late March at Princeton University. The $15,000 prize will be invested in technology and commercialization plans for their vehicle. Their victory at Princeton "is a testament to the power of significant, meaningful collaboration among our engineering and business colleges, SJSU Research Foundation, and highly engaged industry partners," said Malu Roldan, a business professor and EPICS advisor. The team is now preparing for a second national competition this fall, a qualifier for the Super Bowl of business plan competitions, where the top prize is $100,000. The vehicle is a senior design project. The faculty advisors are Tai-Ran Hsu and Raymond K. Yee of mechanical and aerospace engineering, and Dr. Thuy Le from electrical engineering.
