Program Description
The Valley Foundation School of Nursing at San José State University offers a Master of Science Degree in two specialty areas 1) Nurse Educator and 2) Family Nurse Practitioner. We also offer a post masters Nurse Educator certificate. The master's degree programs at San José State University, The Valley Foundation School of Nursing, is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Additionally, San José State University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Masters Essentials is the Foundation for the graduate curriculum. Our Tenured and Tenure Track faculty educated at the doctoral level are dedicated to providing the very finest nursing education.
We accept applicants for the MS Nurse Educator and Family Nurse Practitioner programs in the Fall Semester. Both programs follow a full time cohort model over 5 semesters. Courses are offered in hybrid format which includes online and in-person meetings. Attendance is required one day per week (Tue or Wed) with additional days for clinical practicum courses.
The MS Nursing Program accepts students who have completed a baccalaureate in nursing. Applicants who have a California RN license and who have been awarded a non-nursing baccalaureate degree may be admitted conditionally on and individual basis.
A grade point average of 3.0 (B) is required in the last 60 units of the undergraduate program coursework. Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 will be evaluated on an individual basis and may be admitted in a conditional status.
Potential applicants need to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Physical and psychosocial assessment developed to the level that the applicant can perform and complete history and physical exam on a well adult of either gender.
- Introductory research course that has prepared the applicant to critique the usefulness of specific research to nursing practice
Applying to the Program
The nurse educator and family nurse practitioner graduate programs will be accepting applications for Fall 2019. Application Process:
Please complete the San José State University, office of graduate studies application, available here Cal State Apply. Applications will be accepted October 1, 2018 through February 1, 2019. Please be sure to select the correct option when applying, nurse educator or family nurse practitioner option.
Additional information that will be requested as part of the graduate studies application:
- Current resume
- Statement of professional goals: Include why you want to be a nurse educator or nurse practitioner and your goals after obtaining your degree
- Contact information for two professional or academic references
- Copy or documentation of your current, unrestricted California Registered Nursing License
Once students are formally accepted into the nurse educator or family nurse practitioner programs, additional health documentation will be required (evidence of immunization, background check, drug testing) all administered through third party document tracker.

Information Sessions
Advising sessions are offered for our MS Nursing degree programs. Sessions are for students who have a baccalaureate degree in nursing or for students who have an Associate degree in nursing plus a baccalaureate degree in another discipline.
