Works in Progress:

My fourth book:  California Coastal Wetland Guide.  I am the sole author on this manuscript.  I am also doing all the cartography and photography myself.  The project requires investigating, photographing, and mapping over 125 wetlands from the Oregon border to Mexico.  Furthermore, the entire project is completely financed out of my own pocket book.  I was under contract with UC Press for three years (See UC Press Amendment signature page) until I was slowed down (but not terminated) by a chronic illness (See Summary Statement for further details).  One of my life goals is to have this book published before I retire.

You may wonder, with only a couple more years left at SJSU, why should I bother push myself to complete such a daunting project.  Answer:  Over 90% of California’s precious wetlands are gone.  Most of the general public has no clue what a wetland is.  For example, when in one of my many doctor’s offices last week, I asked the nurse where she was from.  She replied, “San Mateo County.”  I then asked, “Well, you must be familiar with Pescadero Marsh.”   I was shocked (but shouldn’t have been) when she replied, “Yes,but what good is it for?”

Even in our own department, I am shocked at how many undergraduate EnvS majors have no idea what a wetland is, where they are located in California, and the many services that they provide.  For example, when students first come into my EnvS 144 California Wetlands class, so many of them are as clueless as that nurse I mentioned above.  If this book project ever gets published, and I am still teaching at SJSU, I hope to use it as a textbook for the course.

In sum, this book project has a duel purpose:  (1) to enlighten the general public: (2) to serve as a reference/guidebook/textbook for instruction related to California wetlands.
