Comm Major & Minor Advising

Welcome Comm majors and minor! I am here to help you with your advising needs. We may meet online via email or Zoom. Please read over my TWO STEPS before emailing me your student ID number, advising questions, and paperwork.

STEP 1: PLEASE READ OVER MY FAQ

  • How can I change my major or minor to Communication Studies?

We complete change of major/minor requests electronically over email. We do not have requirements for becoming a COMM minor. For Undeclared, other majors, and other transfer students who want to major in Communication Studies, you must:

1. achieve/maintain an overall GPA of 2.0

2. complete 2 upper-division (100-level) courses in COMM (6-8 units) with a 2.0 GPA (i.e., Comm 101C and any of our F or P courses); student with < 60 units earned may complete 2 lower-division (99-level or lower) courses in COMM (6-8 units) with a 2.0 GPA

After completing the above requirements, email me your Student ID number and explain why you want to be a Communication Studies Major or Minor. I will review and submit your request to change your major/minor online.

HAVE MORE THAN 90 UNITS EARNED AND WANT TO CHANGE YOUR MAJOR? You need to complete a 90 units or more Change of Major/Minor form and attach your personal statement if you wish to be a COMM major. Please email these forms to me and I will review your documents and submit them to our department for processing.

  • I need help mapping out my coursework for next semester?

Please use your MyProgress in MySJSU and your MyPlanner to map out your major/minor coursework. We offer a major checklist for upper-division and transfer students on the last page of our Comm Academic Planner. Click HERE for an example of what your schedule would look like from your first semester as an upper-division student (or transfer student) to your final semester. Please email me any questions you have when reviewing or completing your schedule in MyPlanner. You should include your student ID number and your full name in your email.

  • How do I apply for graduation?

Our department does not complete paper graduation applications anymore. You can apply for graduation online through MySJSU. Please review the Grad Application Online Tutorial at http://www.sjsu.edu/registrar/docs/GradAppOnlineTutorial.pdf. You do not need to submit any paperwork to the Office of the Registrar or department after applying for graduation online. Please review your MyProgress to ensure you are meeting all major, minor, and additional university requirements for graduation. Please email me if you believe there are errors on your MyProgress report with an explanation of where you see the error. You should include your student ID number and your full name in your email too.

  • I have already applied for graduation. What happens next?

You should review your MyProgress in MySJSU and your Gradaution Worksheet from your Graduation Evaluator. All requirements listed in your MyProgress must be completed before you graduate. Please email me if you believe there are errors on your MyProgress report with an explanation of where you see the error. You should include your student ID number and your full name in your email too.

  • How do I change my graduation date?

Complete and email me your Graduation Date Change Form. I will sign your form electronically and email it back to you. You will need to follow the payment and submission instructions on the form to complete your graduation date change.

  • How do I complete a course substitution?

Send me an email explaining to me why you are asking for a course substitution. Please include your student ID number and your full name in your email. I will review your request and contact you with my decision.

If you are part of our Honors Program, you may substitute a graduate seminar for one F-I-P or COMM 199C course.

If you participated in the COMMSA program, you may substitute COMM 193/195 for one F-I-P course.

  • How do I enroll in more units?

At this time, you may enroll up to 17 units. Continuing students and graduating seniors may enroll in up to 19 units after a specific date. Enrollment Unit Caps are listed in the Registrar's calendars. You will need to complete and email me your Excess Units Petition if you meet the requirements and date regulations for enrolling in 20 or 21 units per semester.

  • All COMM courses are full or waitlisted. What classes should I enroll in for the fall semester?

We recommend you enroll in your major, SJSU Studies, minor, and any additional coursework needed to complete your university requirements and reach the 120 unit minimum for your degree. You may contact an instructor and attend the first class meeting to inquire about open seats in a specific course. There is no guarantee you will be given an add code for a particular course so look for alternative sections and consider completing your minor and GE/SJSU Studies coursework this semester. Please email me if you are having problems finding courses. You should include your student ID number and your full name in your email too.

  • I am a transfer student. What courses do I enroll in? How do I prepare for my first semester?

You will learn all about our department and which courses to take when you meet with a department advisor during your transfer orientation at SJSU. Our department's Transfer Student page will direct you in registering for your SJSU Transfer Orientation, signing up for the Writing Skills Test (WST), and which courses to take your first semester. Please use our advising forms to map out your major/minor coursework. Click HERE for an example of what your schedule would look like from your first semester as an upper-division student (or transfer student) to your final semester.

  • How do I find a minor?

We highly recommend Communication Studies majors complete a minor. SJSU offers a variety of minors for our majors. You should review a department's minor requirements by clicking on the department name, scroll down until you see the minor, and click on the minor to see the minor's specifics. I recommend completing a core/required minor course to see if the minor is right for you. You should contact an advisor in the minor department if you wish to declare the minor. The minor course(s) you completed will be used as an elective for your degree if you decide to drop the minor or change minors.

STEP 2: EMAIL ADVISING QUESTIONS

Email me your student ID number and your advising questions if you wish to hold advising online. I will respond back with answers to your questions or with a date and time for us to meet on Zoom.

I do not handle questions regarding admission. Please direct questions about admission to the SJSU Admissions Office at http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/.
