Data Science for All Seminar Series

If you are a student at SJSU, I encourage you to attend the Data Science for All Seminar Series.  This is a series of extracurricular seminars on Big Data and data science related topics that I'm involved in along with other faculty in the Lucas Graduate School and College of Business.  The seminars are a hands-on introduction designed for students without a technical background; although all students are welcome (as well as faculty and staff!).  Following each seminar there is an additional activity and quiz you can complete to earn a digital badge attesting to your new skill!

If you are a faculty member who wants to offer extra credit for attending the seminars, please contact us and we can track your students attending.  We also make all of the materials available to faculty at any college or university (please see our Faculty Materials page).

If you are a Community College faculty member in the Bay Area who is interested in presenting any of the seminars to your students, please contact us!  We would be glad to co-teach with you!

Education

Doctor of Philosophy, Computer Science, Indiana University - Bloomington, 2010

Bio

I am an associate professor in the Department of Management Information Systems at San Jose State University and my academic and professional background is in business and technology. I earned my Ph.D. in Computer Science from Indiana University in 2010 (An Adaptable Repository for Complex Scientific Metadata), and prior to starting at San Jose State in 2013 I was a post-doctoral researcher at the Data to Insight Center at Indiana University with a focus on the use of metadata and provenance in the management of large scientific data sets. In the Fall of 2013 I joined the MIS Department here at San Jose State as part of the University's multi-disciplinary cluster initiative in Big Data and Cybersecurity. My research interests are in Big Data, distributed systems, data wrangling, metadata and data governance, and teaching Big Data.

My prior academic experience includes a Masters in Computer Science from DePaul University in Chicago with a concentration in databases (while I was working at Price Waterhouse), and a Masters in Accountancy ('86) and B.S. in Accounting ('84) from Southern Illinois University.

Prior to pursuing my Ph.D. (my midlife crisis), I worked for over 15 years in software development and professional services at Ernst & Young, Price Waterhouse, and Arthur Andersen; including software programming, software design, product management, and client management.
