Shantanu Phukan teaches Cultural History in the Comparative Religious Studies program in The Humanities Department. His areas of interest include: cultural interactions between Muslims and non-Muslims; religion and sexuality; Islamic Mysticism (Sufism); and Islam and Hinduism in the modern world.
He received his Bachelor's degree in Art History from Pomona College, and his Masters and Doctorate in Indian Literature from The University of Chicago. In this picture you see him birding in the San Gabriel Mountains, his favorite haunt aside from India.
