Overview of Quantitative Research Methods
Session 4 (6-14)
Read: Dr. Malos’ book chapter on legal implications of valid selection and performance appraisal practices [see link at bottom of course web page]
Prepare: 2-page double-space paper analyzing strengths and weaknesses of your job [or any job with which you are familiar] with respect to the legal defensibility of applicable selection and performance appraisal processes. How well would they stand up to legal challenge in a lawsuit or RIF? Be sure to demonstrate mastery of the above book chapter and incorporate points from it in analyzing the hiring and appraisal processes. [Caution: If you just describe your job and give an unsupported opinion on its selection and PA processes, you will not do well on this assignment!]
Use the following exact format:
Page 1—describe the job and its selection process(es) in paragraph 1 in enough detail to permit evaluation, then discuss these processes’ legal strengths/weaknesses [i.e., defensibility] in paragraph 2;
Page 2— describe the job and its performance appraisal process in paragraph 1 in enough detail to permit its evaluation, then discuss the process’ legal strengths/weaknesses [i.e., defensibility] in paragraph 2.

*This is a double-spaced 5 page paper, the first 3 of which should briefly summarizewhat you learned from each and all the current topics presentations and the last 2 of which should integrate some overall insight or "gestalt" of presentations across all areas of HR [i.e., what you learned from all this; think strategic—don’t just review; review, think, think some more, & put it all together!! How do all these areas of HR related to one another? Be sure to follow the exact format indicated above.
