BUS159: Day One Overview

  • Costing HRM/Quantitative Analytics [to “talk the talk” with corporate executives!]:
    • Cascio/Boudreau SHRM Text [“The Text”]
    • Individual exercises to be done weekly
    • Submit all work typed/word processed [see policy on professionalism]
    • Do both manually & using online software, then compare results 

 

  • Current Topics Research Papers [to keep up with developments in your profession and business overall, and to obtain the skills to continue to do so!]:
    • Find and write up [individually] scholarly published research in assigned topic area
    • Present joint PowerPoint [in topic’s group area; groups to be assigned based on topic preferences]
    • Submit 1st and 2nd choices next class

 

  • Case Studies [to simulate and apply what you have learned in prior HR classes and in this one for practice in actual professional settings!]:
    • Added from time to time depending on subject [see schedule of assignments]
    • Class discussions and analysis in dyads, small groups and the class as a whole
    • Other activities to be announced

 

To do/prepare before next class session:

    • Get the course text 
      • Read Chapter 1 of the Text and prepare for a quiz [you may use one, double sided crib sheet]
    • Click on and review all links on the main course website; note any questions for next class re: syllabus, assignments, class procedures, etc. 
    • Check out the online software for homework exercises [see Text, p. 17]
    • Prepare 1st and 2nd choices for current topics to hand in
      • Print out form, add your name at the top, designate 1st & 2nd choices from among topics listed 
    • Download Self-evaluation form, fill in name & email address, crop/attach small photo upper left corner above name so I can see who you are and start getting to know you; hand in a blank copy for me to use and keep one for yourself to document your day to day involvement in the class
