Quantitative Research Methods

Time: TuTh 12:00-1:15pm
Location: DMH 227

Description

In this course, students will gain a basic understanding of quantitative research methods. While both qualitative and quantitative methods are important to sociological research, they provide different ways of collecting, analyzing and understanding data. Qualitative methods focus more on the meaning behind social phenomena, whereas quantitative research methods involves quantifying data (measuring numerically) in order to generalize the results from a sample to a larger population. Quantitative research methods consist mainly of designing, collecting, and analyzing survey questionnaires. Through this course, students will gain a better understanding of the difference between qualitative and quantitative methods with first-hand experience conducting their own survey research project. In the course of this project, students will come up with a research question, do a literature review, write a questionnaire, create a codebook, collect survey data and analyze this data using SPSS (a popular software package for data management and analysis). This course is required for majors. Prerequisites: SOCI 1 or equivalent, SOCI 15 or SOCI 102 or approved statistics course from another school; SOCI 100W, SOCI 101 and upper division standing.
