Afshin Najafi, Montan Foundation Scholarship Recipient (2015)
The Göran Montan Foundation will finance two scholarships for two San José State University students for 2017. Scholarships include airfare, hotel and extra international insurance. SJSU will nominate a minimum of three and up to five students (“the candidates”) meeting the criteria.
Regardless of gender, scholarship winners must be:
- US citizens
- Full-time students at SJSU at the time of application
- Majoring or Minoring in Political Science
- Completion of an interview with a representative from the Montan Foundation in early March.
The scholarship includes a return flight (economy class) from San Francisco, CA, to Stockholm, Sweden with SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), airport transfer in Stockholm, hotel accommodation in the city and insurance for international travel if required by scholarship winner (see above – ballpark figure USD 500 per person). Personal expenses, e.g. meals, transportation in the city, tips etc. are not included. Breakfast is included in the hotel rate.
How to apply
SJSU announces and promotes the scholarship during the fall/winter. The Foundation is presented with the candidates by SJSU by the end of March and the Foundation presents the winners by the end of April. The winners will receive their awards in a ceremony at SJSU in May/June. Scholarship trip will be executed in June or July.
The Stockholm Program
This is a schematic program (a Foundation rep will meet up at airport and guide through the week):
Travel San Francisco, CA – Stockholm, Sweden. Airport transfer
Personal day, welcome dinner with Foundation staff
Visiting editorial boards of major newspapers on both sides
Visiting think tanks from both sides
Photo-op with US Ambassador and Speaker of Swedish Parliament
Personal day, farewell dinner with Göran Montan and Foundation staff
Travel Stockholm, Sweden – San Francisco, CA
After having completed the trip the winners are required to write a short essay on their expectations, experiences and comments on the trip and the program. The essays will be sent to the Foundation and SJSU as a means to evaluate and improve the scholarship in the following year.
