War and Peace

Description:

This course examines the causes of war and ef- forts to secure peace. We begin by asking how war is defined. We consider three approaches to the causes of war (psychological, domestic politics, and rationalist explanations). We then consider how human beings have attempted to control conflict through the use of institutions and norms. One week of course time has been set aside so that students may propose countries and/or issues that do not appear on the syllabus.
