New Vice President of Student Affairs

Dr. Reginald Blaylock

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Reginald Blaylock as the vice president for student affairs, effective June 1, 2015.

Dr. Blaylock joins us from San Diego State University (SDSU), where for the last 27 years he has supported and cultivated student success. Since 2013, he has served as SDSU’s associate vice president for student services, leading 10 departments within the Division of Student Affairs, including those that provide educational opportunity programs and ethnic affairs (EOP); health, wellness and disability services; international student and study abroad services, as well as many other programs.

Beyond his leadership responsibilities, Dr. Blaylock was instrumentally involved in numerous SDSU strategic initiatives. These included the Aztec Scholars Initiative, which works to recruit and retain underrepresented African American and American Indian students, as well as efforts to implement physical and campus culture improvements to better serve those with disabilities within SDSU’s campus community.

Previously, Dr. Blaylock served in leadership roles in student recruitment, school relations, outreach and enrollment management, and intercollegiate athletics (for which student-athlete support services at SDSU are housed within Student Affairs). Dr. Blaylock holds a doctorate in educational leadership with an emphasis in postsecondary education, as well as bachelor’s and master’s degree in public administration, all from SDSU.

Throughout the search process, campus stakeholders were impressed by Dr. Blaylock’s unbridled enthusiasm and evident commitment to student success. I look very forward to welcoming him to SJSU and believe you will find him to be an engaging, collaborative, committed leader and community member.

I would like to take this time to personally thank the search committee, chaired by Dr. Sharon Willey, for its considerable investment of time and effort this semester.

Finally, I wish to publicly thank Dr. Renee Barnett Terry for ably serving as interim vice president for student affairs since last July. Under her guidance, Student Affairs made important progress in numerous areas of student life, as well as strengthened an infrastructure on which Dr. Blaylock can build.
