2nd Annual SJSU Day of Service: Getting Things Done Together

To: The Campus Community

From: Don Kassing, University President

I am pleased to invite you to participate in one of several community service projects taking place in the SJSU neighborhood on Friday, April 25, 2008, as approximately 1,000 volunteers (staff, faculty, and students) observe our SJSU Day of Service. The goal of the SJSU Day of Service is building, beautifying, and together, transforming our community.

I urge MPPs and Deans to support faculty, staff, and student participation in the Day of Service and encourage creative and flexible ideas that will maximize the participation of our community. This is an opportunity for a department or program to develop a team as a community- building event. Employees are encouraged to work through the appropriate administrator to ensure that university operations are not adversely impacted and that offices remain open for those who cannot participate.

The Day of Service is an opportunity for learning in a different setting through active participation in thoughtfully organized service experiences that meet the needs of the community and are coordinated with the university. Classes will be in session on April 25, but faculty are encouraged to incorporate the Day of Service into the curriculum by offering students the opportunity to participate in volunteer activities in place of the usual class meeting.

This SJSU event will require the support of the entire university community. For some that means volunteering for one of the many community service projects taking place in the neighborhood. Others will contribute to the Day of Service efforts by assuring that the day-to-day operations of the university continue to run smoothly. Both roles are vital in assuring that this day is both successful and the beginning of a valued tradition at SJSU.

The day will begin at 8 am on Tower Lawn with a continental breakfast and registration. City officials will join me to give you a warm send-off. A shuttle will then take you or your team to the project site. A snack will be provided. At mid-afternoon the shuttle will return you to campus for a BBQ, entertainment and fun.

For specific personnel, contract or policy questions please contact Maria Elena Rivera, AVP of HR, at 408-924-1116. For specific questions about the event, please e-mail Claudia Mendivil.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on April 25! Below are just a few of the types of projects set up for the day. For registration please go to www.sjsu.edu/dayofservice.
