Jennifer Whitmore is the president's wife and partner. The couple met at West Virginia University, and have been together through many career moves to the State University of New York at Buffalo, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Iowa, Texas Tech University and, of course, San José State. Their children, Amy and Ian Whitmore, are University of Iowa students. Mrs. Whitmore attended Fairmont State University and holds a master's in theatre with an emphasis in puppetry and children's theatre from West Virginia University.
"As Jon's wife, part of my job is to host events at the San José State president's house. It is a beautiful home and great for entertaining. Our first reception was for faculty who are new to campus or new to a particular job. It was a fun way to start off the year. We had about 75 people in all and everyone seemed excited to be a part of the university and their new roles. I always feel so old when I'm around new faculty because a majority of them are young and just starting on a career path. Their energy is overwhelming and their enthusiasm is contagious. However, as a 'spouse,' I am always sensitive to the partners of our new faculty and try hard not to approach them with, 'What do you do?' I have too many memories of being asked that myself! Now, my standard answer is 'I have the fun!' And speaking of fun, I'm looking forward to my first Spartan game this weekend; hope to see loads of students there."
