Outstanding Professor Award 2008-2009

I am pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Emily Wughalter, Professor of Kinesiology in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts, as the recipient of the 2008-09 San José State University Outstanding Professor Award. This award honors faculty whose academic career exemplifies excellence in teaching effectiveness.

Since her arrival at San José State University in 1991, Dr. Wughalter has established a remarkable record of teaching excellence, service to students, and service as advisor and mentor to students and faculty peers. Her belief that students receive and process information within the context of their own realities and cultural experiences has led her to become known for her extraordinary ability to create a bond of trust in the classroom that encourages students, even the most introverted, to become willingly engaged, participatory and interactive. Professor Wughalter's extraordinary ability to weave lecture material with group activities and critical discussion of the course reading is unparalleled and worthy of selection as the 2008-2009 Outstanding Professor Award.

Professor Wughalter's SOTE scores have regularly approached the maximum 5.0 on "overall effectiveness," and virtually every teaching evaluation has placed her well above department, college and university standards. Professor Wughalter has taught a wide variety of courses spanning the full range of graduate, undergraduate, general education, physical education and Metropolitan University Scholars Experience (MUSE) courses. Professor Wughalter's passion has clearly been teaching, and she continues to engage in professional and scholarly activities that enhance her teaching ability and currency in her discipline.

An abundance of student testimonials attest to Professor Wughalter's extraordinary teaching effectiveness. One of her students recently wrote: "As a student and a working professional, I have a great many sources to acquire knowledge but a limited amount of time. I have found that the hours spent in Dr. Wughalter's classroom have a very high value of return. Her presentation of content is especially well organized and articulated. She also has an impressive capacity to draw student engagement through thoughtfully posed questions. The discussions that she leads in her graduate level motor learning course extract a great deal of information through student contribution. Dr. Wughalter is a professor who knows how to elicit thinking and involvement." Another wrote: "As a graduate of the master's program in kinesiology and now a professor myself, when I look back at significant people who have shaped the educator and researcher I have become, one of the first persons who comes to mind is Dr. Wughalter. I clearly remember realizing, after my first day or two of class with Dr. Wughalter, that she stood out from many others and her approach to teaching stimulated me to make a conscientious effort to never miss a class. I feel fortunate that her modeling and leadership early in my career directly contributed to my own efficacy in obtaining a terminal degree."

Professor Wughalter's commitment to students is demonstrated by her superior ability to mentor and advise at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in kinesiology and other departments across the campus. Her mentorship skills were evidenced most recently, in 2008, when she chaired a thesis by Ms. Nahida Lebbos that won both the College of Applied Sciences and Arts and the University Outstanding Thesis Award. She is a mentor to both students and faculty alike, oftentimes is called upon to mentor students and peers in curricular and career options.

Beyond her teaching excellence, Professor Wughalter has assumed multiple professional roles that have contributed greatly at the department, college and university levels. Her appointment as director of the MUSE program in 2002, where she was responsible for the overall administration of the program, including the recruitment of students and faculty to participate in MUSE courses and the organization of MUSE workshops, is a clear reflection of her credibility and respect as a professor at San José State University. Outside the university, Dr. Wughalter's leadership in national professional organizations also has been impressive. She has served as president of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) Research Consortium. She was also selected to give the very prestigious Amy Morris Homans Lecture. AAHPERD is the largest organization in the field of kinesiology, with over 22,000 members, and her work with the consortium aimed at continuing the work of AAHPERD members who focus on scholarship used by both researchers and practitioners. She also served on the AAHPERD Board of Governors from 2002-2005 and on the Executive Committee of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports (NAGWS) Board of Directors from April 2002 to April 2005. Finally, she has been a member of the Social Justice and Diversity Committee of AAHPERD. These organizations are not only some of the most prestigious in kinesiology, they are also organizations that allow her to bring the very latest research and legislative information into her classes and the many courses she has guest lectured in over the past 17 years.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Emily Wughalter on her selection as the recipient of the 2008-2009 Outstanding Professor Award, which will be presented to her at the 10th Annual Faculty Service Recognition and Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, April 14, from 11:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., in the Student Union Barrett Ballroom.

Also, please note that as the SJSU Outstanding Professor, Dr. Wughalter will be the keynote speaker at our Annual Honors Convocation on Friday, April 24, at 6 p.m., in the Event Center.
