Subject: President's Annual Scholar Exhibition
It gives me a great deal of pleasure to recognize a member of our University community who has been acclaimed as a distinguished artist and sculptor by colleagues both on and off this Campus. This year Fletcher Benton II, Professor of Art, is the recipient of the Seventh President's Annual Scholar Award. He will present an exhibition on May 9, 1980.
I am proud to have the opportunity to honor Professor Benton, whose accomplish?ments in art are outstanding and whose contributions to the quality of our creative life at San José State University are well known.
Professor Benton received his education at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, receiving his B.A. in 1956. He has taught at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, and the San Francisco Art Institute, before joining the SJSU faculty in 1967. In 1966 he was awarded the "New Talent USA" Art in America award and the Distinguished Service to the Arts, American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters award in 1979. He has presented one-man shows throughout the United States, South America and Europe. Mr. Gerald Nordland, Director of The new Milwaukee Art Center, will give a short talk prior to the opening of an exhibition of Professor Benton's work in Gallery I of the Art Department.
I hope you will join with our University colleagues in honoring Professor Benton by attending his exhibition on May 9, 1980 at 3 p.m. , first in the Spartan Amphi?theater which is located in front of the Student Union and then in the Art Department, Gallery I. The gallery is located on the first floor in the southeast corner of the Art Building. The Exhibition will be open to the Campus community and the general public and will remain in Gallery I until the end of the school year.
