Subject: Christmas Vacation Calendar
As many of you know, it was originally our intent to schedule two holidays (Columbus Day, October 11, and Veteran's Day, November 11) as "in lieu" holidays on December 24 and December 31 so University employees would have two long weekends during the Christmas and New Year's season. However, collective bargaining agreements with Units 1, 5, 7 and 8 that resulted in Trustee Amendments to Title 5 now provide that a holiday falling on a Saturday is celebrated on the preceding Friday. Thus December 24 and New Year's Day, December 31, which are both Fridays, are already holidays and we may use two "in lieu" holidays at some other time.
After extensive consultation with, among others, Academic Vice President Burns, Executive Vice President Evans, and Dean of Student Services Martin, it is my decision to use one of the "in lieu" days on Monday, December 27. This means that the campus will be closed on December 24, 25, 26 and 27, open on December 28, 29 and 30 and again closed on December 31, January 1 and 2.
The October 11 "in lieu" holiday will be used as a "holiday credit" for employees who work that day. Holiday credits are much the same as vacation time. They may, within specific limits, be accumulated, and, unlike the personal holiday, are not lost if not taken within the twelve month period (some limitations apply). A detailed description of holiday credit will soon be forthcoming from the Personnel Office.
I sincerely hope that this vacation schedule will add to your enjoyment of the holiday season.
