Subject: Parking

The recent and unexpected action by the City of San José increasing fees on their Fourth Street parking lots only aggravated an already acute parking situation on campus. The University is exploring a number of alternatives to help alleviate the situation. As the result of deliberations in last Thursday's President's Cabinet meeting, I have directed the Office of Traffic Management to initiate the following actions effective today:

-- Reopening of 9th Street to faculty and staff parking. This includes restriping the area on 9th Street in front of the residence halls. Such action opens 148 new E (Employees) parking spaces.

-- Termination of permit parking in the North Garage (10th and San Fernando streets). This opens the North Garage entirely to student parking. These measures will only partially accommodate those who were displaced from the Fourth Street lots. I deeply regret the inconvenience recent events may have caused and can only ask that you bear with us.

May I again suggest that you investigate alternative transportation. Last year the University hired Mr. Keith Opalewski as our commute coordinator. He has complete information on van and carpools, bus and even bicycle route planning. He may be reached by calling 277-3843.
