I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Carl R. Kemnitz as deputy provost, effective July 6, 2015.

Dr. Kemnitz joins SJSU from California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB), where he has served as a faculty member and administrator since 1998. He took the role as associate vice president for academic programs in 2010. Prior to that, Dr. Kemnitzserved as associate dean in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and as department chair of chemistry.

Dr. Kemnitz holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a minor in philosophy from Occidental College in Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Washington, Seattle.

In addition to his strong administrative and academic credentials, he brings with him an exceptional commitment and track record of creating a supportive environment for students. As director for a National Institutes of Health grant from 2004-2011, he created a program for underrepresented STEM students that achieved a 100 percent graduation rate, well above the traditional completion rate in those disciplines. He developed a similar strategy that retained 100 percent of incoming first-year STEM students into their third year.

Dr. Kemnitz has described his approach to strategic planning as “seeing the forest, the trees and the leaves.” Under his guidance, 11 new degrees and 21 additional programs were implemented at CSUB. He facilitated the WASC accreditation process for that campus, which received re-accreditation for the maximum length. He also led a comprehensive curriculum transformation as the university transitioned from a quarter to a semester system.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Kemnitz to San Jose State.

Sincerely,
Andy Feinstein
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
