What is Honors Convocation?

The Honors Convocation is an annual celebration in which San José State University recognizes its undergraduate students from all disciplines who have earned the designation of President’s Scholars or Dean’s Scholars.

Invitations to qualified students are typically sent in March. The Provost, Associate Vice President for Graduate and Undergraduate Programs, and the deans of each college present awards to the student honorees.

 

What is a President's Scholar?

A President’s Scholar is an undergraduate student who has earned a 4.0 grade point average at San José State University in at least two contiguous semesters of the three semesters prior to the Honors Convocation.

What is a Dean's Scholar?

A Dean’s Scholar is an undergraduate student who has earned a 3.65 or higher grade point average at San José State University in at least two contiguous semesters of the three semesters prior to the Honors Convocation.

When and where is the Honors Convocation?

The 54th Annual Honors Convocation will be held in SJSU's Event Center at 6:00 pm, on Friday, April 15, 2016.

The academic procession will begin promptly at 6:00 pm and doors will close at that time to allow the festivities to begin. For late arrivals, the doors will reopen at approximately 6:10 pm.

 

Where is the Event Center located?

The Event Center is located on the corner of South 7th and San Salvador streets.

 

Where can honorees and guests park their vehicles?

Parking is free to all attendees at SJSU’s North, West, and South Garages but you must request a downloadable permit for each vehicle.  Click here to request a parking permit.  Plan to arrive early to allow time for parking.  For the location of the garages, please view the Campus Map (PDF).

Note that construction will take place in front of the South Garage (7th and San Salvador Streets) and there will be limited access.

 

When should I arrive?

Registration and doors will open at 4:30 pm. Arrive early to allow time for parking and check-in.

Family & guests:  Admission tickets will be distributed at the door.  Tickets are free and general admission (open seating).  Entrance for family and guests is on the second level of the Event Center (arena).

Honorees:  Check in at the courtyard and enter through the main lobby of the Event Center. There are no admission tickets for honorees.

 

When and where do I RSVP?

You must RSVP no later than Friday, April 1, 2016. Seating is limited so we encourage you to RSVP as soon as possible.

 

What if I have graduated?

If you have graduated, you are still invited to attend.

 

What if I am unable to attend this event? How can I get my award certificate?

If you are not able to attend, your certificate will be mailed to you after the event. If you do not receive it within a month of the event, please contact your college office.

 

What is the protocol for honorees at this event?

Upon arrival, honorees must check in at the registration table located in the courtyard of the Event Center. You do not need an ID, just provide your full name and you will receive your honors certificate. You will then be ushered to your seat where you will be seated with your college.

Entrance for honorees is through the main lobby of the Event Center. All other family members and guests will enter the Event Center (arena) from the second level. Wheelchair and elevator access is located on the first floor of the Event Center main lobby (same entrance for honorees).

Dean's Scholar

You will be ushered to your seat where you will be seated with your college. You will be acknowledged with your entire college.

President's Scholar

You will be ushered to your seat where you will be seated with all of the President's Scholars. You will go up on stage to be recognized. Please be prepared to announce your name and major.

 

What is the suggested attire for the event?

Business casual is the suggested attire.

 

Will there be any food or drinks served at the event?

Light refreshments will be provided to all persons in attendance immediately following the ceremony.

 

How will the seating be arranged?

Honorees will be seated separately from their family and guests. Honorees will be seated on the main floor and family and guests will be seated in the tiered seating. Please make arrangements for children to be seated with friends or relatives.  Accessible seating for persons in a wheelchair is located at the top of the tiered seating.

 

How long will the ceremony last?

The ceremony will last approximately 1 hour; therefore, we encourage you to be on time.

 

How many guests can I invite to the Convocation?

You may invite as many guests as you like, however, we will need to have a headcount to ensure that sufficient seating and refreshments are available. You must RSVP for your guests by Friday, April 1, 2016.

 

Is there a charge to guests to attend the event?

No. The event is free to all honorees and their guests.  Family and guests will receive admission tickets at the door.  These tickets are free and general admission (open seating).

 

Is photography allowed?

Personal photographs may be taken before and after the ceremony. No one is permitted in the aisles to take photos during the ceremony.

Photos and video of the ceremony will be posted online after the event. DVDs are not available for purchase at this time.

 

Where is the Office of the Provost located?

The Office of the Provost is located in the Administration building, room 174. The Administration building is located on the north side of campus, on the corner of 7th and San Fernando Streets.
