Amado Burgos

Dean's Scholar

College of Applied Sciences and Arts
Health Science

I am really into care giving and health. My original major was pre-nursing, but due to the impaction of the nursing program, my career goal was diverted. I really wanted to pursue my passion in health and helping people, and as a result I came across Health Science. Health Science truly defined my endeavor to help individuals and communities in health and make a difference through my actions and skills.

Coming from a background always working from a deficit, I never knew I could accomplish such a prestigious award. Being recognized as a dean scholar is very humbling. The award is a manifestation of the fruits of my labor in trying to make a difference in Health Science as well as the community. The Heath Science department at SJSU has helped me further my goals by providing me with various opportunities to reach out to my community and encourage them to stay healthy.

College life is challenging at times and one's sanity may be tested. Throughout my college career at San Jose State, my fiancée, Frances Borromeo, has been my backbone and my moral support in helping me succeed in my path to helping others. Her love and compassion has helped me achieve my academic success and efforts to make a difference in my community.

Academic excellence is necessary to reach one's goal, however, grades are not the only indication of one's academic success. Academic excellence is not just a grade you receive after an exam, a report you turn in, or a project with a group, but is also comprised of a passion you pursue and grow with. My advice to others is to follow your desires of what you want to do for your society and your success will be measured in terms of the difference you have made, rather than the grade you received in class.
In the future, I plan to apply to the Masters in Public Health Program at San Jose State University to prepare myself for a career inpublic health nursing, taking me another step closer in decreasing the health disparities that are widespread in our society today.
