College of Applied Sciences and Arts
I chose Health Science as a major because I am very passionate about helping people. I was originally a pre-nursing major, but wasn't accepted to San Jose States’ nursing program. The Health Science family welcomed me with open arms and provided me an alternate route to accomplishing goal of helping people.
This award means the world to me. It reinforces my hard work and dedication.
My mom and grandpa have been very influential in my life. My mom raised me and my brother, and managed to go to nursing school. Witnessing her perseverance and determination inspired me, and instilled those values in me. When I came to San Jose State, I moved in with my grandpa, and he became the father I never had. He pushed me to excel when no one else did, and for that I am forever grateful.
To encourage other students, I would tell them that achieving academic excellence is possible with hard work. It is one thing to attain good grades, but another to actually grasp and fully understand the concepts learned in the classroom; therefore it is important to be present in the classroom, and take advantage of the skills that are being learned.
My future plans include attending Samuel Merritt University and completing the accelerated nursing program. I plan on utilizing my Health Science degree by becoming a Public Health Nurse.
A few words from her nominating professor:
Ashley is a “young woman whose family really struggled as she was growing up – despite
it all, her mother kept her focused on college. She is an excellent student, a lovely
person, and her mother’s dream come true. She also works on campus in Advancement”.
