Michael Grace

President’s Scholar

Mechanical Engineering
College of Engineering

Why did you choose your major?

I chose mechanical engineering because I felt it would be the most challenging. I also have a background in construction and I felt mechanical engineering would allow me to utilize those skills.

What does receiving this particular award mean to you?

It's a great honor. And, I will no doubt add it to my resume.

Who has been instrumental in your life and/or who has contributed to your academic success?

I have had many mentors over the years in school. No doubt Dr. Rhee has always been a guiding force in my academic career. Dr. Yee, and Dr. Barez have both played instrumental roles as advisor's and mentors. My instructors at Gavilan College also played huge roles in getting my motivated to study math and science, namely Russell Lee and Marlene Dwyer.

Did you overcome any hardships or adversities during your life, that has helped shape who you are today? And if so, could you please briefly elaborate?

I'm in recovery - that has been the biggest blessing in my life. If I hadn't been on the path I was on,  I would not be where I am today.

What would you say to other students to encourage or inspire them to attain academic excellence?

Consider school to be your job.

Where would you like to be in 5-10 years?

I expect to have attained a managerial position. I would still like to be actively engaged in engineering though.
