Dr. Emily Wughalter

SJSU Outstanding Professor of the Year 2008-2009

Emily H. Wughalter, Ed.D, spent the first 10 years of her professional career at New York University, moving to San José State University (SJSU) in 1991, and promoted to professor in 1994.  Dr. Wughalter teaches courses to a wide array of students from first year through graduate level.  Her expectations for all students are for them to be engaged in her classroom as they learn about becoming university scholars.  As a mentor and advisor to numerous students she guides them in making career decisions, analyzing class assignments, working through thesis questions, and finishing degree programs.  Dr. Wughalter was recognized as the Outstanding Professor for the College of Applied Sciences and Arts in 2003.  In 2008 her graduate student, Nahida Lebbos, won the Outstanding Thesis award for SJSU.  At SJSU, Dr. Wughalter held the positions as Associate Dean for First Year Experience and Director of the MUSE Program.  Yearning to return to teaching and the field of kinesiology, she retreated to her appointment as professor early in 2007. 

Dr. Wughalter brings cutting edge information into the classroom through her involvement in scholarly activity in motor learning.  For her professional activity Dr. Wughalter was recognized by her peers to deliver the Amy Morris Homans Honorary Lecture, and to co-edit a special edition of the journal Quest on Social Justice and Diversity.  Dr. Wughalter is a fellow of the North American Society and the AAHPERD Research Consortium. 

She demonstrates leadership in professional organizations as president of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Research Consortium and president of the Western Society for Physical Education of College Women, as well as serving each of these organizations at many levels.   Dr. Wughalter’s career is marked by her advocacy for equity.  She has held many national roles for the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport at its highest levels.  The Presidential Award, the Honor Award, and the California Pathfinder Award have all been bestowed upon Dr. Wughalter for her work on behalf of girls and women in sport.
