Memo:Appointment of the Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs (PDF)

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Joan Merdinger to the position of Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs.

Dr. Merdinger has served as Interim AVP for Faculty Affairs since the retirement of Dr. Peter Lee in July 2004. From 2001 until 2004 she served as the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs. She began her career at San José State University in 1986 as a Visiting Associate Professor of Social Work and received a tenure track position in 1988. She currently holds the rank of Professor in the School of Social Work. Prior to assuming the position in the Office of Faculty Affairs she served as the MSW Program Director and the MSW Field Education Director. When she was Associate Dean of Social Work in 1999, she chaired their self study review in preparation for national accreditation. She is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in California.

Dr. Merdinger holds a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, a MS degree from Simmons College, and AB from Wellesley College. She has served as a teaching fellow at the University of Pennsylvania and a Caseworker for the Social Service Department at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She is the author or co-author of numerous articles on topics such as: foster care, children of color in the welfare system, death and dying, the elderly and the young, and AIDS education. She has a distinguished record of community service and presentations before professional organizations.
