Memo:Appointment of the Dean of Education (PDF)

It is with pleasure that I announce the appointment of Dr. Elaine Chin as Dean of the Connie L. Lurie College of Education. She will assume her duties effective June 1, 2009.

Dr. Chin has served as Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs in the Lurie College of Education since July 1, 2007.  She originally came to SJSU from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, College of Education where she served as Department Chair and as Associate Director for Teacher Education for over a ten-year period.  During her tenure as Associate Dean at San Jose State University she has demonstrated exemplary administrative capabilities.

While at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo she provided leadership for the creation and organization of a new teacher education division in the College of Education, fostered collaboration between faculty and student teaching supervisors in order to improve students’ experiences in the program, rationalized the division’s budget allocation to better align with university’s allocation model, chaired and served on numerous college-wide faculty search and RTP committees and served as the College representative on the Academic Senate .

Dr. Chin earned a B.A. in English and an M.A. in English Education from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Education (Language, Literacy & Culture) from Stanford University.

Dr. Chin believes that, “The ethos of confidence in ourselves, commitment and passion for our work, and knowledge of what we can accomplish through intelligent collaboration, results in a strong, healthy unit which is characterized by the enduring qualities of resiliency, collegiality, and a commitment to excellence and equity.”
