Upon completion of a national search, and after discussions with the search committee, I’m pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Ruth Huard to be the Dean of the College of International and Extended Studies (CIES), effective June 2, 2014.
Dr. Ruth Huard joined CIES in 2009 and has been serving as Interim Dean since January. In that role, she has collaborated with the College's leadership council to set the direction and goals for both continuing and international education, in alignment with SJSU’s Vision 2017.
Dr. Huard oversees the five CIES departments: Extended Education (credit programs), Professional Development and Training, International Programs and Services, International Gateways, and International Recruitment and Partnerships. As Dean, she will manage the administrative units of the college and be responsible for supporting over 11,000 students that participate in the extended education programs annually, as well as 2000 international students.
With over 10 years of academic and professional experience in the areas of learning sciences and technology design, Dr. Huard has facilitated the growth of online teaching and learning opportunities for the SJSU community through academic entrepreneurship and accessible technologies. She has also managed the development and implementation of extended education programs for SJSU students and the broader community, including launching the high-demand (bottleneck) courses program as a means of increasing student access to critical courses.
Dr. Huard has held a variety of academic leadership positions at SJSU and at University of Hawaii, Manoa. She was an SJSU Salzburg Fellow in 2013. As a former faculty member at the University of Hawaii, she enjoyed teaching courses in emerging technologies, research methods, and applied organizational communication. She has six years of successful industry experience, applying her entrepreneurial skills at Silicon Valley start up companies. She worked primarily in the areas of web applications and user interface design.
Dr. Huard’s primary interest and focus continue to be on the people that engage with the transformations that contemporary technologies bring to higher education. Dr. Huard states: "I have a heartfelt dedication to the mission of CIES and will work diligently to ensure that the College increases access to quality educational opportunities for all individuals and develops students as global citizens who become productive and contributing members of their community."
Dr. Huard holds a Ph.D. in Education from Stanford University and a B.A. from Claremont McKenna College.
I extend my congratulations to Dr. Huard and look forward to the contributions she will make to success of the CIES mission.
I would also like to thank the members of the search committee for their diligence and for taking on this important additional assignment on behalf of the university.
