Profile of a Senior Assistant Librarian for SLIS

Marci Hunsaker

Marci Hunsaker is the Library liaison to the students and faculty in the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS). With 1,800 students this semester, and over 100 faculty members, SLIS is one of a handful of graduate degree programs completely on line at SJSU. Marci is the only librarian whose main liaison responsibility is to an online program. Serving so many students plus faculty may seem like a daunting task to mere humans, but Marci thoroughly enjoys her work. She has created online tools such as Lib guides and tutorials, which are heavily accessed by students. She has also been able to create effective online tools for instructors. "I am able to collaborate through online classrooms and chat tools where I can meet students and answer questions about library resources."

A typical student request may involve how to access databases or journals. Marci is able to show students how to search more effectively and to find articles and books on many topics. An instructor may want assistance with a library account or may have questions about various online resources. Some instructors also request Marci as a guest speaker for their online classes.

Interactions with international students are not uncommon. "I was recently working with a student from Italy through online chat and AppShare which allows for an online sharing of desktops. I was able to open the world of over 113,000 eBooks to him." She enjoys pulling in resources and working with other subject liaisons to solve problems.

A 2006 graduate of the SLIS program herself, she was an intern, a graduate assistant and then a librarian. "It was a great program. It set me up to be successful." For example, when she discovers that several students have the same question, she will work with the faculty to set up a short tutorial. Marci loves helping students find credible references and resources and gets hundreds of requests every semester. She finds it interesting to work with students across different time zones. When she discovers a student is located nearby, she encourages them to come to the library for a visit. Like many other university librarians, Marci is part detective, part expert, and a friendly guide for students and faculty.
