Meet the Provost - BioCarmen Sigler
Provost and VP for Academic Affairs
Dr. Carmen Sigler, Provost and Vice
President for Academic Affairs at San José State University, was born and raised in
Argentina. After
completing her undergraduate education in
Argentina, she received A.M. and Ph.D. degrees in Romance
Languages and Literatures from the University of Michigan. Her
field of specialization is Golden Age Spanish Literature and she has published
books and scholarly articles on topics related to Renaissance Spanish literature
and foreign language education in Spain, Argentina and the United
States.
Provost Sigler joined the faculty of the
Department of Foreign Languages at San José State University in 1987 serving as Teacher Education Coordinator,
Associate Chair for Curriculum, and Department Chair (1992-1998). In Fall 1998, she became Acting Dean of
the College of Humanities and the Arts – the largest college in the
University. In March 2000, she was
appointed Dean following a national search. In addition to her duties as Dean, she
served as Interim Vice President for University Advancement during the academic
year 2002-2003.
In her
capacity as Provost and Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Sigler provides leadership
to the Division of Academic Affairs at San José State University which includes seven colleges (Applied Sciences and
the Arts, Business, Education, Engineering, Humanities and the Arts and Social
Sciences), the University Library, and administrative offices such as
Undergraduate Studies, Graduate Studies and Research, International and Extended
Studies, Institutional Research, Faculty Affairs, Academic Technology, and the
SJSU Research Foundation.
As an active member of the community,
Provost Sigler serves on the Board of Trustees of Montalvo Center for the Arts,
Opera San José, and the Knight Foundation’s San José Community Advisory
Committee and is the Board Chair of the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon
Valley. She is member of the
Downtown Rotary Club, the First Act Catalyst Team and the San José Public Art
Master Plan. She was also appointed
to the State Bar of California’s Council on Access and Fairness and is a
commissioner for WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges). She is also a past participant in the
San José Community Leadership program and a member of the American Leadership
Forum Class XIX. For the CSU she
serves on the Institute for Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee, the
Intersegmental Coordinating Council, and the HR Advisory Council and chairs the
International Education Task Force.
A former recipient of the California
Foreign Language Teachers Association’s Outstanding Teacher Award, Dr. Sigler
was honored by the Luso-American Federation for her contributions to foreign
language education. She is also a
past recipient of the YWCA Twin (Tribute to Women in Industry) award and a
recipient of the 2008 Silicon Valley Business Journal’s Women of Influence Awards.
