Mentoring is one of the best ways to facilitate the development of employees at all stages of their career, often providing the necessary support to help staff successfully transition from being individual contributors to supervising others and growing professionally to lead programs and direct departments on campus.
"Mentoring/Coaching is the process of helping people discover for themselves how to achieve goals, develop skills and knowledge, identify solutions for themselves, and leverage strengths." (MarciRinkoff, PCC, CPCC, MBR Coaching)
The idea of mentoring begins in the Odyssey, when the king leaves his son in the care of Mentor. When the king returns 21 years later, he realizes that Mentor modeled manhood skills for his son so that the young prince grew as a whole person, a leader, and a man of integrity. Since then, the term "mentor" has been used to describe someone who through their relationship with another person, helps them develop the knowledge, skills, competencies they need to be more successful through personal modeling and dialogue.
