  • Farmworker's Daughter: Growing Up Mexican in America by Rose Castillo Guilbault

    • Author on campus to talk about her story, answer questions and sign books

  • Banned Books Week Events (10/2 - 10/4/07) (pdf)

    • Tuesday 10/2/07 from noon - 1 pm - SJSU Debate Team on Pros and Cons of Banned Books

    • Wednesday 10/3/07 from 11:30 - 2 pm - Public Performance of Ginsberg's Howl and Opportunity to Review Some Banned Books

      • The student organization - Poet and Writers Coalition will perform a reading of Allen Ginsberg's controversial poem - Howl. In 1956, the owner of City Light Books in San Francisco was arrested on obscenity charges for publishing this lengthy poem. He won the trial. 

      • Reading of the poem will take place from noon - 1 pm (note - R rating)

      • From 11:30 - 2 pm, there will be a collection of banned books for people to take a look at and even sit down and start reading. There will also be information on why the American Library Association (and others) sponsors Banned Books Week each year and why some books are challenged or banned in the U.S. and elsewhere. 

  • The Advancement of Learning by Huber and Hutchings - 2-hour discussion group held 6/19/07 co-sponsored with the Center for Faculty Development. Book information is at http://www.carnegiefoundation.org/publications/pub.asp?key=43&subkey=1254.

  • The Inheritance of Loss - two discussion groups held in April; author was on campus in April with the Center for Literary Arts

  • The spring 2007 - Wall of Reading - Celebrating 150 Years of Great Literature

  • The Kite Runner  (campus reading book for 2006/2007)

  • Nickel and Dimed (campus reading book for 2005/2006)

  • When Generations Collide by Lynne Lancaster and David Stillman

    • The Campus Reading Program, the Human Resources Service Group and Student Affairs are co-sponsoring a reading group on this book in fall 2006 and spring 2007.  Author Lynne Lancaster spoke on campus on 9/21/06.

  • What the Best College Teachers Do by Ken Bain

    • Sign up with the Center for Faculty Development to obtain the book + attend a discussion sessions on 3/22 and 4/26 from noon - 1:30 pm in IRC 101.

  • The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2005)

  • Readings on Diversity

    • SJSU President Kassing is again leading a reading and discussion group in Fall 2006 focused on SJSU's shared value of diversity.

  • Student Success in College: Creating Conditions That Matter, by Kuh, et al (Jossey-Bass, 2005)

    • SJSU President Kassing and Campus Reading Program Committee Chair Annette Nellen co-facilitated a discussion on this book in fall 2005 with 24 employees and students from across campus. This was tied to the campus efforts for achieving Vision 2010 and emphasizing our shared value of student success.
