1. What is Advanced Registration period and when does it start?
Advanced Registration period is the registration period which usually starts two and a half month before each term starts. Students will need to check via MySJSU when are their appointments start. Please see question# 3 on how to view your enrollment appointment. Please view Registration Calendar ahead of time.
2. When does Late Registration period start and end?
Late Registration period is starting from the first day of instruction to the last day to add. Student will be able to add/ drop via MySJSU during this period. Please check the specific dates on Registration calendars for current and future terms. Late fee will apply for all first-time adds. Questions regarding fee, please contact Bursar's office.
3. What is Enrollment Appointment and how to view it?
Enrollment Appointment is the starting date and time that you can register. Before the particular term starts, your appointment will be falling within the Advanced Registration period(please see question 1.) and it is based on your class level and Priority Registration Groups. Here is the navigational steps of how to view your enrollment appointment on MySJSU. This instruction is posted on MySJSU homepage under Students, Help Tutorials, Quick Steps.
4. Some of my friends/ classmate have earlier enrollment appointments and I wonder why? How do I request for an earlier enrollment appointment? The classes I need are filling up very quickly.
Your Registration Appointments was set up based on your class level and Priority Registration Groups. The Priority Registration system was approved by Enrollment Committee of the Academic Senate. If your appointment is correct according to your class level and the Priority Registration group, we will not be able to move it to an earlier date or time.
5. How do I add a class during Advance Registration or Late Registration?
Here is the step by step instruction showing you how to add a class.
During the Advance Registration period, you may add yourself on waitlisting. During the Late Registration period, waitlisting is no longer valid. You will need to attend the first day of class and obtain a permission number from your instructor. Permission numbers are at the instructor’s discretion. Via MySJSU, you will need to enter permission number after you select the class you wish to add.
6. How do I audit a class?
To request to change the normal letter grading to Audit (AU), read and print the Audit Option form (PDF) carefully for instructions and requirements. Once this form is signed and submitted, student will have no option to revert the audit back to a graded option. No grade points will be posted on the student's permanent record. For additional information regarding the Audit Option, please see the Grading System in the University Catalog. Submit this form to the window "R" (Registrar) counter in the Student Services Center before the add deadline.
7. How do I take a class as credit/ no credit instead of a normal letter grading?
You can submit a request to change normal letter grading to credit/no credit (CR/NC). This option is only available to upper-division (Junior or Senior) and Post Baccalaureate students. Read and print the Credit/ No Credit Option form (PDF) carefully for instructions and qualifications. For additional information regarding the Credit/No Credit Option, please see the University Catalog. Submit this form to the window "R" (Registrar) in the Student Services Center before the Add deadline.
8. Why can’t I register in 100W classes, I passed WST?
Other than passing WST, 100w classes also require students to be in upper division standing, which mean you need to be in junior or senior level class standing. Junior level starts at 60 and senior level at 90 units.
To find out the number of units earned(UE), you can access a copy of your unofficial transcripts via MySJSU and look at the number of units under the coding "UE".
If you are currently having less than 60 units, you can:
1. Wait until you become a junior to take upper division courses or
2. Download a Petition to enroll in Upper Division coursework with less than 60 units to get approval to take upper division courses as a lower division student.
9. What do I need to do if I tried to register and received a message “Instructor Consent” or “Department Consent” required?
Here is the information regarding Instructor Consent or Department Consent.
10. I need to register for 2 classes that have a time conflict. How do I go about this?
You will need to obtain a permission number from the instructor of one of the classes, and a letter written on department letterhead. This letter need to say that the instructor is aware of the time conflict and the student is approved to add the class. You should then bring the letter and permission number to the window "R"(Registrar) at Student Services Center(SSC). Our office will verify the letter and help you add that class.
11. My records show “ELM, EPT, Remediation”. I need to register for classes, what do I need to do?
Please note that the icon that appears on your MySJSU is not a hold. It is a reminder that ELM or EPT satisfaction is pending. If you think you may be exempt from the ELM or EPT, please contact Susan McClory at Susan.McClory@sjsu.edu or 408-924-5070. Her office is in MH room 311.
You may also want to visit Susan McClory's website where you will find a list of acceptable classes, remediation students can enroll into (Executive Order 665).
12. I need to retake a class for the first time because I did not have a passing grade of C or better, what do I need to do? I heard about grade forgiveness, how does it work?
To retake a class (register for the second time); you need to wait until the first day of class (see registration calendar for specific term). You will need to ask for a permission number from the instructor. Once you receive it, use that number to register via MySJSU. You do not need to file a petition for grade forgiveness.
“Grade Forgiveness” will be applied once the grade of the repeated class is earned. Grade Forgiveness (Formerly known as “Academic Renewal” ) is the circumstance in which the new grade replaces the former grade in terms of the calculation of GPA. The original grade remains on the transcript but not being calculated into GPA. The policies regarding repetition of courses with Grade Forgiveness apply only to courses taken and repeated at SJSU. Here is the link to catalog and policy regarding this:

13. I need to retake a class for the second time (register for the third time), what do I need to do?
To enroll in the class for the third attempt or more, you need to file Repeating a Course for More Than Two Times Petition (PDF).
This may result in grade averaging or in grade forgiveness, which will be determined at the time of processing. See University Policy F08-2 for complete descriptions. This petition is also to be applied to courses that are not repeatable for credit.
The deadline to submit this petition is the last day to add, please refer to Registration calendar for specific semester.
