Risk Management

The Research Foundation's Risk Management Department seeks to provide a safe and healthy environment for all employees of the SJSU Research Foundation and the SJSU community, protecting our people, property, and financial resources by ensuring all programs are conducted in accordance with regulatory compliance requirements.

Our full risk management program includes:

  • Identification of both insurable and non-insurable risk,
  • Advising senior administration and project personnel of potential exposures, and
  • Proposing mechanisms to minimize or eliminate these exposures.

We provide numerous types of insurance, including property, general liability, crime, vehicle coverage, marine, travel, and special events.

Our Services

  • Consult with SJSURF management, Pre-and Post-award management staff, and the campus community on Risk Mitigation implementation strategies
  • Assist Foundation projects and programs with Injury and Illness Prevention Program compliance
  • Evaluate and consult with faculty, staff, and students regarding the need for Special Eventt Insurance for campus functions
  • Procure International Travel Insurance for faculty and staff leaving the country on SJSU business or research using San Jose State University Research Foundation Funds.
  • Work with the SJSU and the CSU Office of Risk Management and the Office of General Counsel to investigate and manage claims against the SJSU Research Foundation.
  • Defensive Driving and Driving on State Business requirements
  • Submit state Vehicle Accident Reports to SJSU Research Foundation Office of Risk and Insurance Management
  • Work with the Office of Sponsored Programs pre-award staff and all departments on meeting insurance requirements for agreements and contracts
  • Assist Academic departments with Field Trips, Service Learning, Student Teaching and other off-campus activities
  • Coordinate Risk Management with the San Jose State University Risk Management and the CSU Systemwide Risk Management.

International Travel to High Hazard Areas

All travel to high hazard areas on behalf of SJSU Research Foundation using Foundation funds must be approved by the CSU Chancellor’s office and the SJSU University President.

Per CSU Memo Code: RM 2013-01 - Approval for all other faculty, student, and staff travel to high hazard areas or countries on the US State Department Travel Warning List has been delegated to the Executive Vice Chancellor/Chief Financial Officer.
