U.S. law requires companies to employ only individuals who may legally work in the United States – either U.S. citizens, or foreign citizens who have the necessary authorization. The Form I-9 was implemented to document that each new employee (both citizen and non-citizen) hired after November 6, 1986, is authorized to work in the United States.
Effective June 1, 2011, the Research Foundation became a designated E-Verify employer.
E-Verify is an electronic or online program administered by by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, USCIS, Verification Division, in partnership with the Social Security Administration. Through this online program, employers verify the employment eligibility of their employees after they are hired. The employee and employer input and submit information online which is taken from a new hire’s Form I-9, and that information is then routed through the electronic E-Verify portal directly to the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to determine whether the new hire’s information matches government records. This process determines whether or not the new hire is legally authorized to work in the United States.
In undertaking and administering this important federal compliance initiative, the Research Foundation has partnered with Equifax, an E-Verify Designated Agent organization that offers leading electronic I-9 services. Equifax's I-9 management service is fully compliant with government regulations and integrates seamlessly with the government’s E-Verify portal and program.
All new employees, including re-hires, benefited, and non-benefited, must complete the E-Verify process within three (3) days of the start of their employment by accessing and filling out the online or electronic I-9 Form at http://www.newi9.com/. The employees must also be ready to present original verification documentation to their designated E-Verify administrator.
