SJSU Salzburg Scholars | Application

We are inviting applications from highly-qualified students to serve as SJSU Salzburg Scholars during 2016-2017.  This is a competitive opportunity for outstanding colleagues from across the campus to broaden their understanding of significant global issues and to help globalize SJSU.

After completing a variety of orientation activities during the Spring 2016 semester, the new Fellows will attend an intensive week-long session of the Global Citizenship Program hosted by the Salzburg Global Seminar in Summer 2016 (probably June).  The session will be held at the Seminar's historic palace of Schloß Leopoldskron in Salzburg (Austria), the home of Mozart and a UN World Heritage Site located in the heart of Europe at the foot of the Austrian Alps.

Participants are chosen on the basis of three primary criteria, as demonstrated in their applications: [1] excellence (in terms of their primary roles and responsibilities at SJSU); [2] leadership (in terms of their ability to mobilize others and work collaboratively); and [3] leverage (in terms of their potential for amplifying the impact of their contributions).

Students who are selected to serve as Scholars must commit to participating in the Program for an 18-month period (Spring 2016–Spring 2017), including completion of a collaborative project with SJSU Salzburg Fellows (faculty and administrators) to promote global citizenship, positively affect the University as a whole, and strengthen their own abilities to live and work in a complex interconnected world.

We expect to select 12-15 new Scholars this year.  Although there may be some financial support available from different units at SJSU, Scholars are responsible for securing funding to cover their costs for participating in this experience.  This funding can include support from campus, external, or private sources.  Total costs of the trip to Salzburg won't be finalized until sometime in early Spring 2016 - but program fees will probably be $3,000, while travel costs will probably be $1,500-$2,000 (round trip). Scholars are also responsible for obtaining valid passports and (if required) appropriate visas.

If you are interested in serving as an SJSU Salzburg Scholar in 2016-2017, please submit the required Application below.  Completing your application online is easy, reliable, and completely secure.  Only materials submitted online will be accepted and it will help to prepare the required documents in advance so they can be easily entered and uploaded.

Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to review general information on this website, including the SJSU Salzburg Video and the Application FAQs in Quick Links on the home page, and attend an Information Session (Wed 10/21/15 @ 12:00-1:30 in SPX 210 or Thurs 10/22/15 @ 12:00-1:30 in SPX 210) before submitting an application.
