Our Approach



Several priorities distinguish our approach to teacher education:

(1) Strong subject-matter emphasis.  Each of the subject areas in which we offer credentials (Art, English, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Science and Social Science) has a unique subject-specific methods course taught by specialists in the field.  Similarly, Phase II student teaching seminars and supervision are led by subject-matter specialists with extensive teaching experience in the discipline.

(2) Intensive clinical field experiences.  All of our candidates spend extensive time in the field, with approximately36 weeks of observation and assistance in classrooms and 20o hours of lead teaching across the two semesters of student teaching.

(3) Commitment to diversity.  Our wide network of graduates as well as our strategic partnerships with local schools allow us to place student teachers in diverse settings, learning to teach the full spectrum of students in the region.  In our courses, we emphasize methods that help candidates reach and teach the rich array of learners in our service area.

Program Learning Outcomes

Teacher preparation programs in California are governed by a set of program standards (CTC Standards: Educator Preparation) and a set of performance outcomes (for multiple and single subject candidates, see the California Teaching Performance Expectations [pdf].

In addition to these learning outcomes, defined for all programs by the state of California, our program also adheres to the outcomes implicit in the College of Education Vision and Mission statements.


Program Philosophy

The philosophy of the Single Subject Credential Program at San José State University is based on a vision of professional educators who can function effectively and sensitively in the multicultural, multilingual, and technologically complex environment of today’s secondary schools. The faculty is committed to preparing teachers who are critical and reflective practitioners who are prepared to:

  1. Make informed and thoughtful decisions in their daily practice
  2. Serve in diverse educational contexts
  3. Promote equity, respect for person, and social justice
  4. provide fair-minded and responsive instruction for ethnically and linguistically diverse populations.

Our graduates must also be aware of uses of technology for learning, and they must be well-prepared in current education theory, research, methods, and practice
