Single Subject Internship

The Single Subject Internship Program* at San Jose State University is a collaborative effort between the faculty of the Single Subject Credential Program and many local school districts. The Internship Program offers high quality teacher education for secondary school (grades 7-12) teachers while they work in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. Interns receive on-going coaching from experienced classroom teachers and university faculty. Course work ties theories of "best practice" to interns' classroom experience.

Because interns are in their own classrooms from the very begining of their teacher preperation, individuals considering an internship should have previous teaching experience or related experience working with adolescents as well as possess effective time management skills and confidence in front of groups. In addition, the following must be accomplished before signing an intern agreement:

• Bachelors degree with a minimum GPA of 2.75 from an accredited university
• All pre-requisites and be admitted to the Single Subject Credential Program
• Completion of Pre-Intern Experience (June-July)
• An offer for a teaching position (at least .60) from an intern partnership district

Note: Individuals are not required to be contracted prior to being accepted into the internship program.  These individuals not contracted must apply for positions with partnering districts (after completing the Pre-Intern summer Experience, Interns who do not secure a teaching contract may convert to the traditional program, receiving credit for summer courses taken).

• Intensive Pedagogial Preparation courses taken in the summer (June-July) before beginning teaching assignment

• Release time for professional development
• Convenient part-time class schedule with cohort group

*An approved program of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC).  Early completion option is available for individuals meeting qualifications and requirements.

Initial Steps :

• Apply to SJSU Graduate Studies at CSUMentor.edu, indicating that you're applying to the Single Subject Credential Program for the Fall semester (even though you'll be starting in the Summer as an Intern).
• Complete all of Secondary Education's Application Requirements.
• Indicate interest in Internship on Secondary Ed's Applicant Information Form [pdf] form, and check off "Fall" for starting the program (even though you'll be starting in the Summer as an Intern).
• Meet with your Subject Area Advisor to establish subject matter competency. Take additional courses or the CSET if required.  Intern Applicants must be Subject Matter Competent in order to be considered for this program.
• Include a cover letter (one page, single spaced) outlining teaching and related experiences/skills you believe make you a good candidate for the Intern Program pathway.  Please indicate if you are currently under contract with a school district and/or if you have a firm job offer for the fall (include name of district and school).
