General Information

 

Program Options

San Jose State University offers two ways to earn a Single Subject Credential:

  1. Traditional Single Subject Teaching Credential 
  • take courses full-time or part-time
  • student teach under the supervision of a resident teacher and a university faculty member.

   2.   Intern Single Subject Credential Teaching Credential

  • work at least 60% as a teacher with one of the participating school districts
  • take courses on a part-time basis
  • receive support from an onsite coach and a university faculty member. 
 

Program Length

  • Candidates who attend SJSU full-time will complete the professional preparation credential requirements in two to three semesters.
  • However, depending on individual needs, one may take up to five years to complete the program.

Candidates teaching full-time are advised to spread out their course load. If a candidate is required to take subject matter preparation courses, those courses are taken in addition to the units required to complete the Preliminary Credential .

Progress in Program

  1. To successfully progress through the credential program, individuals must maintain a 3.0 GPA
  2. When a candidate's GPA falls below 3.0 in the professional preparation coursework required for the credential, the candidate is not allowed to enroll in student teaching and may be disqualified from the Program.
  3. If a candidate earns a grade lower than 'C' in a course, that course must be retaken even if the overall GPA is 3.0.
  4. Candidates must earn a minimum of a B- in their subject specific methods class.
  5. Candidates whose overall GPA is below 3.0 at the conclusion of the Program will not be recommended for the credential.

 Note: The student is ultimately responsible for ensuring that requirements are satisfied. Please check with your advisors regularly to ensure that nothing is being overlooked.
