POLICY RECOMMENDATION

METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY SCHOLARS EXPERIENCE (MUSE) NEW STUDENT SEMINAR PROGRAM IN CORE GENERAL EDUCATION (GE)

(to supercede SO1-11)

Whereas:          The MUSE program was implemented at San José State University in fall, 2002 and continued in 2003-04, and

Whereas:          MUSE seminars need to conform to the curricular requirements and approval processes of the university, and

Whereas:          the constraints imposed by a very large number of courses needing review in a short period of time preclude the use of the regular approval process for General Education courses, and

Whereas:          MUSE courses are designed specifically for first year students, and

Whereas:          the MUSE faculty and advisory committee have worked since the inception of the program to develop a workable approval process that will comply with that noted in the GE guidelines (S98-11), and

Whereas:          the Board of General Studies made specific recommendations for delineating a permanent process for review of MUSE seminar proposals to meet GE guidelines, and

Whereas:          there is a high level of trust and professionalism among the faculty at SJSU, therefore be it

Resolved:         that starting fall 2004 MUSE courses may fulfill CORE GE in Areas B1, B2, C1, C2, D1, or E, and be it further

Resolved:         that for GE areas in which there are a sufficient number of MUSE sections to support two or more peer review groups (a peer review group consists of two to five instructors in the same GE area to assist in the development of courses) for course development, course proposals shall be exchanged among peer review groups for the initial GE review, with a member of the appropriate General Education Advisory Panel (GEAP) augmenting each peer review group to ensure expertise in GE evaluation, and be it further

Resolved:         that for GE areas in which there is only a single MUSE peer group, all courses be sent to the appropriate GEAP for initial review, and be it further

Resolved:         that all MUSE courses be evaluated through the peer review group process every year regardless of the number of times they are offered, and be it further

Resolved:         that final review of changes recommended in the initial review process should be approved by the Director of MUSE, and the AVP of Undergraduate Studies or the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and be it further

Resolved:         that in order to ensure that all MUSE Peer Group Coordinators have the same knowledge/background relating to the GE Guidelines, the Coordinators will meet together at the January MUSE workshop, and also within their respective GE areas, and be it further

Resolved:         that a January workshop will be required for new MUSE faculty and optional for returning MUSE faculty, and be it further

Resolved:         that a MUSE course be assessed prior to the fourth time it is taught.   The Assessment Packet will be similar to the assessment coordinator’s summary for regular GE courses. Revisions based on the assessment should be incorporated into the course during its fourth offering, and be it further

Resolved:         that students may take and earn university and GE credit for only one MUSE course, and be it further

Resolved:         that students may receive Academic Renewal for a MUSE course in which they have received a C-, D+, D, D-, or F by completing another (non-MUSE) course in the same GE area.
