At its meeting of February 23, 2004, the Academic Senate passed the following Policy Recommendation presented by Sally Veregge for the Organization and Government Committee.
POLICY RECOMMENDATION:
AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE SENATE
REMOVING THE ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR FACULTY AFFAIRS AS AN
EX OFFICIO MEMBER OF THE SENATE
WHEREAS, Many Senate meetings consider issues that do not directly impact Faculty Affairs and thus consultation from the Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs is not required at all meetings, and,
WHEREAS, Other Associate Vice Presidents, for example the Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Studies and the Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies, do not have ex officio seats on the Senate and are candidates along with the Academic Deans for four seats on the Senate designated for Academic Deans, and
WHEREAS, During any particular term or meeting, the business of the Senate might be of greater importance to any one of the Associate Vice Presidents or Academic Deans, and
WHEREAS, Any Associate Vice President or Academic Dean can attend Senate meetings and address the Senate concerning issues related to that Associate Vice President’s or Dean’s area of responsibility, and
WHEREAS, For purposes of election to the Academic Senate, Associate Vice Presidents are included under the designation of “Academic Deans,” and the Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs can be elected to the Senate as a representative of the Academic Deans, and
WHEREAS, The incumbent Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs has dutifully attended Senate meetings and, when appropriate, given the Senate valuable information and advice, and can do so without ex officio Senate membership, now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Academic Senate proposes, pursuant to Article VI, the following amendment to the Senate Constitution:
Section 2. Administration
representatives shall consist of the President, the Provost, the Vice President
for Administration, the Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs,
and the Vice President for Student Affairs, ex officio; and four (4) academic
deans, at least two of whom shall be deans of colleges, elected by the academic
deans for staggered two-year terms.
