At its meeting of September 25, 2006, the Academic Senate passed the following Senate Management Resolution presented by Senator Debra David for the Curriculum and Research Committee.

 

SENATE MANAGEMENT RESOLUTION

CREATING AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAMS

TASK FORCE

 

WHEREAS:  Interdisciplinary programs are becoming increasingly important in the 21st century because real-world problems cross disciplinary boundaries, and

 

WHEREAS:  The Association for American Colleges and Universities and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching have issued a joint statement identifying integrative learning as a necessity and recognizing the value of interdisciplinary studies in promoting such learning[1]; and

 

WHEREAS: The SJSU Strategic Plan identifies integrative learning as a goal for Vision 2010; and

 

WHEREAS:  There is faculty and administrative interest and support for expanding interdisciplinary programs, as demonstrated by a petition circulated in 2003 which was signed by almost 100 individuals from every College; and

 

WHEREAS:  Current interdisciplinary programs at San José State University are handled on an ad hoc basis; and

 

WHEREAS:  Interdisciplinary programs pose challenges for our existing policies and procedures, particularly in the areas of faculty appointment, retention, tenure, and promotion; governance; resource allocation; and program advocacy; therefore be it

 

RESOLVED:            That an Interdisciplinary Programs Task Force be convened to: 1) identify policy and procedural issues related to interdisciplinary programs; and 2) make specific recommendations for how to address those issues; and be it further

 

RESOLVED:            That the task force consult with faculty, staff, and administrators as needed; and be it further

 

RESOLVED:            That the members of the task force include the following members, and select its own chair:

 

Associate Vice President of Graduate Studies and Research or designee

                        Associate Vice President of Undergraduate Studies or designee

                        Chair, Curriculum and Research Committee

Chair, Professional Standards Committee

                        Chair, Graduate Studies and Research Committee

Chair, Undergraduate Studies Committee

A College dean, selected by the academic deans

A department chair or school director, selected by the University Council of Chairs and Directors

                        Three faculty-at-large selected by the Executive Committee of the Academic Senate

                        One Student-at-Large, and be it further

                                   

RESOLVED:            That the task force present a progress report to the Curriculum and Research Committee by the end of Spring, 2007, and a final report to that Committee by November, 2007. The task force shall be dissolved upon final action by the Academic Senate.
