SM-F08-4, Senate Management Resolution, Dissolution of the Extended Studies Committee

Legislative History:

The Continuing Education Advisory Committee was created by University Policy F71-13.  The composition of the committee was changed to include faculty from each college by University Policy S72-2.  The word “Advisory” was removed from the committee title by University Policy F88-5.  The title and charge of the Committee was modified by Senate Management Resolution, SM-S05-2 (to the current Extended Studies Committee and charge as stated below).

At its meeting of October 20, 2008, the Academic Senate approved the following Senate Management Resolution presented by Senator Backer for the Organization and Government Committee.

SENATE MANAGEMENT RESOLUTION

Dissolution of the Extended Studies Committee

Resolved:        that the Extended Studies Committee, an operating committee of the Senate be dissolved; and be it further

Resolved:        that the Senate acknowledges and thanks the current and former members of the Extended Studies Committee for their contribution of time and energy to the necessary but usually unheralded and often ignored task of faculty governance.

Approved:      October 6, 2008

Vote:               8-0-0

Present:          Backer (chair), Hebert, Reade, Selter, Hendrick, Main, Vanniarajan, Contreras, Norton (non-voting)

Excused:        Rickford, McClory

Rationale:

As of December 31, 2007, International and Extended Studies (IES) no longer offers non-degree or certificate programs. According to Associate Dean Zlotolow, this change reflects a shift in the domestic market away from non-degree and certification programs.  Despite its name, the charge of the Extended Studies Committee was a narrow and specific one. IES does not expect to create new non-degree credit certificate courses in the foreseeable future. As its meeting of 2/22/08, the Extended Studies Committee recommended that the committee be abolished.

Financial Impact: None

Workload impact: Reduction of workload for Extended Studies Committee members.

Extended Studies Committee Charge (CURRENT CHARGE)

Extended Studies Committee [CR] Advises the Dean of Extended Studies; studies and recommends policies and procedures related to Extended Studies (ES) activities; evaluates and approves the review and approval process for all certificate programs which consist solely of non-degree credit courses.
