At its meeting of May 17, 2004,
the Academic Senate passed the following Senate Management Recommendation
presented by Sally Veregge for the Organization and Government Committee.
DISSOLVING THE
IMPROVEMENT OF INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE AND TRANSFERRING ITS CHARGE TO THE STUDENT
SUCCESS AND INSTRUCTION AND STUDENT AFFAIRS COMMITTEES
WHEREAS,
One of the major tasks
of the Improvement of Instruction Committee was to select the Outstanding
Professor and this task has been transferred to an Outstanding Professor Award
Selection Committee; and
WHEREAS, The Center for Faculty Development and Support and the
Academic Technology
Office exist today to handle several of the instructional matters mentioned in the charge of the
Improvement of Instruction Committee, and
WHEREAS, The last WASC
report indicated that the University may have too many committees and should
look at streamlining its committee structure; and
WHEREAS, Subcommittees
and task forces with members selected because of their expertise and interest
in a task may be more effective than a standing committee that meets
infrequently; and
WHEREAS,
The Student Success
Committee has been very active and is able and willing to assume the relevant
portions of the charge of the Improvement of Instruction Committee; and
WHEREAS, The
Instruction and Student Affairs Committee is willing to assume the remaining
portion of the responsibilities of the Improvement of Instruction Committee;
therefore be it
WHEREAS, The
membership of the Instruction and Student Affairs Committee and the Student
Success Committee needs to be adjusted to provide adequate representation from
Student Affairs; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That
the Improvement of Instruction Committee be dissolved and that the appropriate
portion of its charge be transferred to the Student Success Committee and that
the remaining portion of its charge be transferred to the Instruction and
Student Affairs Committee, and be it further
RESOLVED, That, should the need arise and with
the approval of the Senate Executive Committee, the Instruction and Student
Affairs Committee be allowed to establish task forces to address specific
matters of instruction that are beyond its ability or the ability of the
Student Success Committee to address in a reasonable time period, and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Director of Student Life and
Leadership, the Director of Residential Life (or their designees), and one
graduate student (replacing the student-at-large) be added to the Instruction
and Student Affairs Committee, and be it further
RESOLVED, That
the Director of the Career Center, the Director of the Disability Resource
Center, and the Director of Counseling Services (or their designees), one
graduate student, the Director of MOSAIC, and a representative from Student
Affairs-selected by the VP of Student Affairs, be added to the Student Success
Committee, and be it further
RESOLVED, That the charge of the Student
Success Committee read as follows:
The
Student Success Committee reviews and recommends changes to academic policies,
practices and procedures, including instructional concerns, and their implementation
as they relate to all aspects of student enrollment, retention, learning and
success. This charge includes but is
not limited to the following matters:
integration into the University community; improvement of skills and
competencies; time to degree; and implications of enrollment, registration and
academic renewal policies, and be it further
Recommends policy and provides advice to both
the Student Resource Center And THE LEARNING CENTER; PROMOTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF PRE-COLLEGIATE
AND COLLEGIATE SKILLS IN LANGUAGE AND
MATEHMATICS WITH DUE WIEGHT TO EDUCATIONAL EQUITY NEEDS OF ALL STUDENTS. MAKES DECISIONS REGARDING PRIORITY
REGISTRATION REQUESTS; STUDIES PROBLEMS AND RECOMMENDS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
RELATING TO ALL ASPECTS OF STUDENT RECRUITMENT, ENROLLMENT, AND RETENTION.
RESOLVED, That
the charge to the Instruction and Student Affairs Committee read as follows:
Responsible
for all matters relating to instruction and to student affairs, including
recruitment, admission, retention, academic status, educational equity, rights
and responsibilities. The Instruction and Student Affairs Committee may
establish task forces in consultation with the Executive Committee of the
Academic Senate to address specific matters that are beyond its ability or the
ability of the Student Success Committee to address in a reasonable time
period.
