At its meeting of April 4, 2005, the Academic Senate passed the following Senate Management Recommendation presented by Senator Donoho for the Executive Committee.

SENATE MANAGEMENT RESOLUTION

CREATING AN E-PORTFOLIO TASK FORCE

WHEREAS, Portfolios have been used for many years as a learning and assessment tool to help students coordinate and assemble their course work into a useful resource for the class and beyond; and

WHEREAS,  Many institutions have used software, including websites, to enable students to create electronic portfolios (e-portfolios) rather than paper-based portfolios, with the trend growing because of the value seen by the institutions in helping students see their university experiences in a cohesive and integrative record that can be tied to learning objectives and allow for students to exercise creativity in the display of their work;

WHEREAS,  E-portfolios offer several benefits over paper portfolios in that they are easily accessible and portable, yet protectible by password, and in some disciplines, such as teacher education, can become tools that the students will continue to build throughout their careers;

WHEREAS,  Some departments and units at SJSU are currently exploring the use of e-portfolios either due to accreditation or solely pedagogical reasons;

WHEREAS,  Start-up costs can be high and benefits can be derived from coordination of efforts; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That an E-Portfolio Task Force be established to identify the current efforts underway to enable students in some programs to create e-portfolios, what tools they will be using for the e-portfolios, and the issues and opportunities they see with e-portfolios. A report for the Senate will explain the purposes of e-portfolios, and the associated issues and opportunities including any policy and resource implications; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the membership of the Task Force be:

§         One faculty member from each college with efforts made to identify someone already involved in learning about or using e-portfolios

§         One representative from Student Affairs, selected by the VP of Student Affairs who is already involved in learning about or using e-portfolios

§         The AVP of Academic Technology (or designee)

§         The AVP of Undergraduate Studies (or designee)

§         Two students selected by the Executive Committee based on their interest in e-portfolios

The AVP of Academic Technology (or designee) will convene the first meeting and the task force will select its own chair. The Committee on Committees will identify the faculty members of the E-Portfolio Task Force. The task force will consult with the Assessment Committee as needed; and be it finally

RESOLVED,             That the Task Force issue its report to the Academic Senate before April 2006 and then be dissolved.
