At its
meeting of March 10, 2008, the Academic Senate passed the following Senate
Management Resolution presented by Senator Backer for the Organization and
Government Committee.
SENATE MANAGEMENT RESOLUTION
Whereas it is increasingly clear
that there is a dramatic need to make better and more efficient use of
renewable and nonrenewable resources; and
Whereas SJSU has a
responsibility to educate its campus community about sustainability; and
Whereas SJSU has a
responsibility to lead by example in increasing sustainable practices;
therefore be it
Resolved that a Task Force on
Sustainability be formed; and be it
Resolved that the Task Force
survey sustainability efforts at SJSU, survey other universities with regard to
sustainability efforts, study sustainability issues related to SJSU, and make
recommendations concerning sustainability at SJSU.
Resolved that the members of the
Committee be:

Vice President for Student Affairs or designee
·
One college dean chosen by the college deans
·
·
One representative from Spartan Shops
·
One faculty or staff member from each representative unit
appointed by the Academic Senate on nomination of the Executive Committee; with
such members selected for their interest and/or expertise in sustainability
·
One faculty member from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories
·
AS Director of Community and Environmental Affairs
·
Two students at large to be appointed according to the procedures
of the Associated Students
The chair of the Task Force will be elected by the faculty
members of the Task Force.
Resolved that the Task Force be
convened during Spring 2008 and that the Task Force will report to the Academic
Senate by March 1, 2009.

There are several groups working on campus on issues related to
sustainability. SJSU should undertake a systematic approach to the question of
sustainability by educating the campus, communicating ongoing efforts, and
conceptualizing curricular approaches to this issue. This resolution calls for
the establishment of a task force which should allow SJSU to take the first
step in making sustainability a central concern of our institution.
