At its meeting of September 26, 2005, the Executive Committee of
the Academic Senate passed the following Sense of the Senate Resolution
presented by Senator McClory.
Sense of the Senate
Resolution
Honoring United States Senator J. William Fulbright on the occasion of
the celebration of his centennial Year
Whereas, J. William Fulbright strongly believed in
promoting international peace1, and
Whereas, He
was the author of the legislation establishing the Fulbright Program1,
and
Whereas, Since the
establishment of the Fulbright program in 1946, over 250,000 individuals have
participated in the program1, including faculty and students from San
José State University, and
Whereas, “Many of these individuals have made
significant contributions to their countries as well as to the overall goal of
advancing mutual understanding1,” and
Whereas, Senator Fulbright drafted the Fulbright Resolution,
adopted in 1943, which supported “an international peace-keeping machinery
encouraging United States participation in what became the United Nations1”,
and
Whereas, Senator Fulbright’s vision of building mutual understanding among
nations and in support of peace is very much alive in the legacy of the
programs he championed, and
Whereas, 2005 is the 100th anniversary of
Senator Fulbright’s birth, now, therefore be it resolved
Resolved, That the Academic Senate of San José State University honor
Senator J. William Fulbright and join the world-wide celebration of his
centennial year, and be it further
Resolved, That the Academic Senate of San José
State University warmly welcome, Harriet Fulbright, Senator Fulbright’s widow,
to our campus and present her with this Resolution.
