At its meeting of September 25, 2006, the Academic Senate passed the following Sense of the Senate Resolution presented by Senator Thames for the Executive Committee.

 

SENSE OF THE SENATE RESOLUTION

IN SUPPORT OF ASSOCIATED STUDENTS, SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY'S

2006 CAMPUS-WIDE VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE

 

WHEREAS,  The 1998 Higher Education Act requires that higher education institutions "make a good faith effort to distribute a mail voter registration form, requested, and received from the State, to each student enrolled in a degree or certificate program and physically in attendance at the institution, and to make such forms widely available to students at the institution" and

 

WHEREAS, The mission of the California State University is "to prepare significant numbers of educated, responsible people to contribute to California's schools, economy, culture, and future; to prepare students for an international, multi-cultural society; [and] to provide public services that enrich the university and its communities;" and

 

WHEREAS, The mission of San José State University is "to enrich the lives of its students, to transmit knowledge to its students along with the necessary skills for applying it in the service of our society, and to expand the base of knowledge through research and scholarship;" and

 

WHEREAS, One of the goals of San José State University is to develop "responsible citizenship and an understanding of ethical choices inherent in human development," and

 

WHEREAS, Associated Students is launching a campus-wide voter registration rive and Get Out the Vote efforts, therefore be it

 

RESOLVED, That the Academic Senate support and applaud Associated Students' efforts to get students to register and to vote; and be it further

 

RESOLVED, That the Academic Senate in conjunction with Associated Students and the Division of Student Affairs encourage all faculty members to promote civic engagement, including non-partisan registration of students.
